The BMW And MINI EGR Cooler Recalls In The UK: Which Diesel Models Are Affected, The Fire Risk And How To Get The Free Repair
BMW's EGR recalls fix diesel exhaust gas recirculation coolers that can leak glycol coolant. In rare cases the residue can ignite in the intake manifold and cause a fire. 10 UK recalls since 2018 cover diesel BMW and MINI models built from about 2011, and the repair is normally free at a BMW or MINI dealer.1

The vehicle-record totals overlap, because the same car can appear in more than one recall, so they are not a count of separate cars. When the first recall was announced in 2018, Which? reported that about 268,000 UK diesels were involved, later extended by a further 27,000.2 For each reference's full details, open its page from the table or search our recall code lookup.
Why A Leaking EGR Cooler Can Cause A Fire
Glycol leaking from the cooler mixes with soot and builds up in the intake manifold, where hot exhaust gas can make the deposits smoulder or ignite.
- Exhaust gas is cooledSome exhaust gas passes through the cooler before going back into the engine.
- Coolant can leakA cracked cooler can let coolant into the gas flow.
- Deposits in the intakeSticky deposits can build up, and hot gas can make them smoulder.
EGR stands for exhaust gas recirculation. The system sends a measured amount of exhaust gas back into the engine to lower combustion temperatures and cut nitrogen oxide emissions. On a diesel the exhaust gas is very hot, so it first passes through a small cooler that uses the engine's coolant. If the cooler cracks inside, coolant containing glycol can seep into the gas stream. Over time it combines with soot to form a sticky residue in the intake manifold. That residue can overheat and, in rare cases, catch fire, sometimes with the engine running and sometimes after it has been switched off.
This is why BMW's recalls describe the risk as a "thermal incident" rather than a simple leak. See cars recalled for fire risk for fire-related recalls on other makes.
Why Some Cars Were Recalled Twice
The first wave replaced leaking coolers. In 2022 BMW added a second recall to check the intake manifold for damage caused by leaks that had not been detected.
The sequence ran like this:
- 2018 to 2021: replace the cooler. The early references replaced or checked the EGR cooler, the source of the leak.
- 2022: inspect the intake manifold. R/2022/255 and R/2022/256 covered cars where a leak could have gone unnoticed and left deposits behind. The fix checks the manifold and replaces parts where needed.
- 2023: more glycol leak references for later 2 Series, X1 and MINI models.
So a car that had a new cooler in 2019 can still be called back for the manifold check. That is a different action, not a repeat of the same repair. Our data shows the median gap from the first affected build date to the recall was 102.3 months, which fits a fault that develops after years of use rather than straight away.
Warning Signs, And Can You Keep Driving?
Stop driving and call the dealer if you smell burning, see smoke from under the bonnet or keep losing coolant. Otherwise follow the urgency in your letter and book promptly.
| Sign | What it can mean | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Burning smell | Deposits overheating | Pull over somewhere safe, switch off and call for help |
| Smoke from the engine bay | Possible fire | Get everyone out and away, then call 999 |
| Coolant level dropping with no visible leak | Internal cooler leak | Book the dealer promptly |
| Engine warning light with loss of power | Many causes, including EGR faults | Get it checked |
None of the BMW EGR references in DVSA data carries an instruction to stop driving, but your letter is the authority for your car. If it gives any parking or driving advice, follow it. Our guide to whether you can drive a car with an outstanding recall explains how to read the urgency in a letter.
How To Check Your BMW’s EGR Recall Status
Enter your registration here, then ask BMW or any BMW Approved Retailer to check your VIN for each EGR action.
- Run your registration through the checker above.
- Enter your VIN on BMW's vehicle recall page, linked from our BMW recall check and MINI recall check. It shows open actions for your exact car.
- Ask the dealer for a printout of completed recall work, which is useful if you sell the car.
See where to find your VIN if you need it. If you bought the car used, do not assume the earlier owner had the work done.
Buying A Used BMW Or MINI Diesel
High-mileage diesels from 2011 to 2019 are common on the used market, and many will have been through at least one EGR recall. Before you buy, ask the seller for the dealer's record of completed recall work, ask a BMW retailer to check the VIN, and look for coolant top-ups noted in the service history. An open EGR recall is not a reason to walk away on its own, because the repair is free, but you should book it straight after purchase. Our guide to buying a used car with an outstanding recall has a printable checklist.
How Long The EGR Repair Takes
BMW does not publish a standard time. Ask the dealer when you book. In 2018 and 2019 some owners waited up to about eight weeks for parts.2
Ask whether a courtesy car is available while you wait, and get the booking confirmed in writing. Our guide to how long a recall repair takes covers what to ask.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is An EGR Delete Legal?
No. Removing emissions equipment can fail the MOT and breaks construction and use rules, and it does not clear an open recall. See recalls and the MOT.
Are Petrol BMWs Affected?
No. These EGR recalls cover diesel models only. Petrol BMWs have their own recalls, so check your registration.
Does An Open EGR Recall Fail The MOT?
No. An outstanding recall is shown for information, not as a fail.3 See recalls and the MOT.
I Paid For An EGR Cooler Before The Recall. Can I Claim?
Possibly. Ask BMW UK with your invoices. See car recall compensation.
