Can You Claim Compensation For A Car Recall In The UK? The Routes, The Evidence And The Current Schemes

Recall data from DVSA, updated 15 October 2026.

There is no automatic right to compensation for a car recall in the UK. The repair is free, but extra costs are paid only if the manufacturer agrees, a scheme covers you, or you win a legal claim.12 Start with the manufacturer, keep every receipt, and check whether a scheme already exists for your car.

Where Do I Take My Claim?

Are You Entitled To Compensation For A Recall?

Not automatically. DVSA has no power to make manufacturers pay, but manufacturers often cover reasonable costs, especially for stop-drive recalls.1

The free repair is the core of any recall.2 What happens around it, such as hire cars, taxis or time off work, is a commercial decision for the manufacturer unless a court decides otherwise. Public pressure can shift that decision. During the 2025 Citroën and DS stop-drive, the Secretary of State wrote to Stellantis urging it to offer courtesy cars, financial compensation or at-home repairs, and to prioritise vulnerable customers.3 See stop-drive recalls for the support offered.

Four Ways To Claim

You can ask the manufacturer for goodwill, use a scheme if one exists, go to the small claims court, or join a group action.

Route Best for Cost to you Notes
Manufacturer goodwill Hire, travel and small losses during a recall Free Ask in writing with receipts. Most claims start and end here
Manufacturer scheme Known problems with a published scheme, such as PureTech Free Conditions and dates apply4
Motor Ombudsman Poor recall repair work, or a car knowingly sold with an outstanding recall, by an accredited business Free Cannot review the issuing of a recall5
Small claims court Reasonable losses the manufacturer or seller refuses to pay Court fee For contract claims in England and Wales, the limit is six years6
Group action Large shared claims, such as emissions Usually no-win-no-fee Long timescales, outcomes uncertain7

Trading Standards prosecutions are criminal cases, not compensation routes. A dealer fined for hiding recalls pays the court, not the buyer.8

What Counts As A Reasonable Loss?

A reasonable loss is a cost you would not have had without the recall, that you tried to keep low, and that you can prove. Manufacturers and courts look for the same three things.

Costs that usually fit that description are:

  • Transport while the car could not be used, such as a modest hire car, taxis or train fares, when the letter said do not drive or the dealer could not offer a date.
  • Lost earnings you can evidence, for example when a stop-drive left you unable to reach work.
  • Repairs you paid for that the recall later covered, with the invoice.

Costs that are harder to recover are luxury hire cars, losses you cannot document, and general inconvenience. Asking for a sensible, itemised amount, backed by receipts, is more persuasive than a round figure.

How To Ask The Manufacturer For Goodwill

A short, factual written request works best. Send it to the manufacturer's UK customer relations team rather than the dealer, because the manufacturer owns the recall and decides on goodwill. Our manufacturer recall helplines page lists each brand's contact.

Include these points in your request:

  1. Your registration, VIN and the recall campaign code.
  2. The dates: when the letter arrived, when you asked for a repair, and when it was done.
  3. What the recall prevented you from doing, for example using the car under a stop-drive notice.
  4. An itemised list of costs with copies of receipts.
  5. The amount you are asking for and a reasonable date for a reply, such as 14 days.

Keep the tone calm and specific. If the reply is a refusal, ask for the reasons in writing, because that letter is useful if you take the claim further.

Current UK Compensation Schemes And Claims

These recall-related schemes and claims were open or in progress at our last check on 15 October 2026.

Scheme or claim Who it covers What it offers Status
Stellantis PureTech compensation platform 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech engines in Citroën, DS, Peugeot and Vauxhall cars Costs for excessive oil consumption or premature timing belt failure paid between 1 January 2022 and 31 December 2024, with servicing conditions4 Check current status before applying
Citroën and DS airbag stop-drive, 2025 Owners told not to drive Courtesy cars, at-home repairs and mobility support; daily payments of £22.50 reported for some vulnerable owners9 Case by case
Ford Kuga plug-in hybrid battery, 2020 Kuga PHEV owners affected by the 2020 battery recalls Extended warranty and a £500 fuel card per owner10 Historic scheme
Diesel emissions group litigation (Pan-NOx) About 1.6 million claimants across 13 group orders High Court judgment of 10 July 2026 found prohibited defeat devices in 3 of 20 sample vehicles; quantum trial October 20267 Ongoing, appeals likely

Schemes change. Our pages on PureTech recalls and the Ford Kuga recall track the details for those cars.

Evidence To Keep

Keep the recall letter, every dealer email, the dates of calls, receipts for hire cars, taxis and fares, and any proof of lost earnings.

The evidence list is:

  • the recall letter and envelope, showing the date it arrived
  • emails and letters from the dealer and the manufacturer
  • a log of phone calls: date, time, name, what was said
  • receipts for hire cars, taxis, trains and buses
  • evidence of lost earnings from your employer
  • invoices for any repair you paid for before the recall
  • the job card for the recall repair

Ask for every promise in writing. A claim is much stronger when the manufacturer has confirmed a delay or an offer by email.

If the manufacturer refuses, you can claim reasonable losses in the small claims court. Where you bought a faulty car from a dealer, you may also have rights against the seller under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.11

Time limits apply. In England and Wales, an action founded on a simple contract cannot be brought more than six years after the cause of action arose; Scotland and Northern Ireland have different rules.6 Before going to court, send the manufacturer a final letter setting out what you are claiming and why, with copies of your evidence and a reasonable deadline. If the car was sold to you with an undisclosed recall, see buying a used car with an outstanding recall. If the dealer refused the repair, see what to do if a dealer refuses to fix a recall.

Before you sign with a claims firm

Claims Firms And No-win-no-fee

Check the percentage fee, whether a free route such as a manufacturer scheme already covers you, and what you would pay if you cancel.

The questions to ask any claims firm are:

  • What percentage of any award do you keep, including VAT?
  • Is there a free scheme that would cover my claim without you?
  • What do I pay if I cancel or stop responding?
  • Which court action or group order would my claim join?
  • Are you regulated, and by whom?

A firm that will not answer these clearly in writing is a reason to pause.
