Each recall covers only certain DOT week and year codes, listed on the recall's page. The Bridgestone Duravis is a van tyre, so fleet operators should check every van fitted with that size. See van recalls.

How To Read The DOT Code

The last four digits of the DOT code show the week and year the tyre was made, so 1519 means week 15 of 2019.1

Reading a tyre sidewall BRANDNAME MODEL 5 205/55 R16 91V DOT 2319 1 Brand 2 Model 3 Size and rating 4 DOT date code
  1. BrandThe tyre maker, in the largest letters.
  2. ModelThe tyre range name. Recalls name the model and size.
  3. Size and ratingWidth, profile and rim size, then load index and speed rating.
  4. DOT codeThe last four digits are the week and year it was made: 2319 means week 23 of 2019.
Reading a tyre sidewall

Look on the sidewall for the letters DOT followed by a string of letters and numbers. The date is the final four digits, often in a raised oval. It may be on the inner side of the tyre only, so you might need to turn the steering or look from underneath. A three-digit code means the tyre was made before 2000.1 Note the brand, the model name, the size (such as 225/45R17) and the DOT date, then compare them with the recall.

What To Do If Your Tyres Are Recalled

Stop using them as soon as practical and contact the retailer or manufacturer. Recalled tyres are normally replaced free, and the retailer can confirm whether fitting is included.

  1. Check the DOT range in the recall to confirm your tyres are included.
  2. Contact the retailer that fitted them, or the tyre maker.
  3. Drive gently, avoiding high speeds and heavy loads, until they are replaced.
  4. Check the spare, which may be from the same batch.

Keep the receipt or invoice for the old tyres, which makes the claim easier. You won't usually pay for a safety recall.2

Why Tyre Recalls Are Easy To Miss

Tyre makers usually don't know whose car their tyres are on, so most owners never get a letter. The retailer that fitted the tyres may have your details, but tyres bought online or fitted by a mobile fitter often leave no record. That's why the DOT code check matters: it's the only way to match your tyres to a recall. If you buy new tyres, ask the fitter to note the DOT codes on your invoice and keep it with the car's paperwork.

Tyre Label Tests Are Not Safety Recalls

A failed tyre label test isn't a safety recall. The label on a new tyre declares its fuel efficiency, wet grip and noise ratings, and DVSA checks whether tyres match what is declared.

When a tyre misses its declared rating, DVSA can ask the maker to explain and correct it, but the tyre is not usually unsafe and isn't recalled for that reason. A safety recall is different: it covers a defect that could cause a tyre to fail, such as a manufacturing fault in the tread or bead. DVSA's Market Surveillance Unit handles both kinds of work.3

Tyre Age, Caravans And Trailers

Tyres age even when they aren't used, which matters most on caravans, motorhomes and trailers that stand for months. Check the DOT date as well as the tread, and ask a tyre specialist about replacing old tyres even if the tread looks fine. See motorhome and caravan recalls and trailer recalls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Recalled Tyres Fail The MOT?

Only if the tester sees a defect, such as a bulge or exposed cord. A tyre recall itself isn't checked at the MOT. See recalls and the MOT.

Will A Registration Check Show A Tyre Recall?

No. Tyre recalls are linked to the tyre, not the car, so check the brand, size and DOT code instead.

Are US Tyre Recalls Relevant?

Only if the same tyre, size and DOT range was sold in the UK. Check the UK list above.

  1. The tyre DOT date code is the last 4 digits: week + year (e.g. 1519 = week 15 of 2019). 3-digit codes = pre-2000. pirelli.com
  2. The Code does not itself say repairs are free. GOV.UK guidance says "You will not usually have to pay for any repairs or parts under a safety recall." gov.uk Checked 15 Oct 2026.
  3. DVSA's Market Surveillance Unit investigates possible non-compliant diesel emissions (defeat devices) and will "where necessary, recall affected vehicles". The government is considering a mandatory environmental recall regime under the Environment Act 2021; no regime is in force (answer 5 Jun 2025).
