Mercedes-Benz recalled E Class vehicles built between 1 June 2015 and 30 September 2016. On certain 6 and 8 cylinder engine vehicles a faulty rear engine compartment panel/bulkhead may have been installed. The dealer will inspect the clearance between the rear engine compartment panel/bulkhead and the exhaust catalytic converter. You won't usually pay for it.1

What’s Wrong

On certain 6 and 8 cylinder engine vehicles a faulty rear engine compartment panel/bulkhead may have been installed. It is therefore possible that the panel/bulkhead may contact the left exhaust catalytic converter due to insufficient clearance. If the catalytic converter is subjected to high temperatures due to heavy driving conditions i.e. full throttle or towing then there is a risk of the rear engine compartment panel igniting and a vehicle fire ensuing.

DVSA's Original Wording

Concern: RISK OF FIRE Defect: On certain 6 and 8 cylinder engine vehicles a faulty rear engine compartment panel/bulkhead may have been installed. Remedy: Recall all affected vehicles to inspect the clearance between the rear engine compartment panel/bulkhead and the exhaust catalytic converter. If the clearance is insufficient then the rear engine compartment panel/bulkhead will be replaced.
