Ford recalled Cougar, Mondeo vehicles built between 1 November 1999 and 1 May 2000. The design of the parking brake ratchet teeth can allow a partial engagement resulting in damage to the tooth which can then slip to the next tooth. The dealer will replace parking brake lever assembly with one that has a revised tooth profile. You won't usually pay for it.1

What’s Wrong

The design of the parking brake ratchet teeth can allow a partial engagement resulting in damage to the tooth which can then slip to the next tooth. If ignored the wear will continue on the next tooth and the efficiency of the parking brake may become insufficient to hold the vehicle in place.
