UK Car Recalls For Brake Faults: Affected Models, Warning Signs And How Quickly To Act

Recall data from DVSA, updated 15 October 2026.

Brake recalls fix faults in the pedal, hydraulics, brake servo, ABS electronics or parking brake. They are the most common type of UK car recall since 1992: 916 in DVSA's data, 250 of them since 2020. Check your registration, and stop driving if the brake warning light comes on or the pedal feels different.

Brake Warning Signs That Mean Stop Now

Stop when it is safe and call the dealer if the brake warning light comes on, the pedal goes hard, soft or sinks, the car pulls sharply, or the parking brake won't hold.

Sign What it can mean What to do
Red brake warning light Low fluid or a hydraulic fault Stop when safe and call for help
Pedal goes hard Loss of servo or vacuum assistance Stop and get the car recovered
Pedal feels soft or sinks to the floor Air or fluid loss in the hydraulics Stop and get the car recovered
Car pulls sharply when braking A caliper or hose fault on one side Stop and get it checked
Parking brake won't hold or won't release Electronic parking brake fault Don't rely on it; chock the wheels and call the dealer
ABS or stability warning light An electronics fault; normal braking usually works Drive gently to a garage

Brake faults can get worse quickly, so don't wait for a recall letter. Get the car checked and run your registration through our checker. See car recall symptoms and can you drive a car with a recall?.

Which Parts Of The Brake System Get Recalled?

Recalls cover six areas: the pedal box, the hydraulic lines and fluid, the brake servo and vacuum pump, ABS and stability control electronics, the electronic parking brake, and the pads, discs and calipers.

The parts of a brake system named in recalls 1 Pedal 2 Master cylinder, servo 3 Brake pipes 4 Calipers 5 Discs and pads 6 ABS unit and parking brake
  1. Pedal and switchThe brake pedal, pedal box and brake light switch.
  2. Master cylinder and servoTurn pedal force into hydraulic pressure, with power assistance.
  3. Pipes and hosesCarry brake fluid to each wheel.
  4. CalipersSqueeze the pads onto the discs.
  5. Discs and padsWhere the car is slowed.
  6. ABS and parking brakeThe ABS or stability unit and the handbrake or electronic parking brake.
The six parts of the brake system that appear in UK recalls, from the pedal to the wheel.
Area What can go wrong Typical fix
Pedal box and linkage A weld or bracket can crack, so the pedal stops working New pedal assembly
Hydraulics: fluid, pipes, hoses, master cylinder Leaks or contamination reduce braking force New pipes, hoses or seals; fresh fluid
Servo and vacuum pump Loss of assistance makes the pedal very hard New pump or hose; on some engines, belt checks
ABS and stability electronics Faulty control units or software affect braking under hard stops Software update or new module
Electronic parking brake The brake may not hold or may apply unexpectedly Software update or new actuator
Pads, discs and calipers Rarely: wrong parts or faulty calipers Replacement parts

18% of brake recalls include a software update, usually for ABS, stability control or electronic parking brakes. The servo and vacuum pump group includes the PureTech recalls, where debris from a timing belt could reach the vacuum pump and reduce braking assistance. See PureTech recalls.

Stop-drive Brake Recalls

Brake stop-drive notices are rare. Only 4 brake recalls in DVSA's data tell owners not to drive. The latest were for the new Citroën C3 Aircross and Vauxhall Frontera in September 2025, over a brake pedal bar weld.

Recall Model Launched Vehicle-records Fault
R/2025/363 Citroën C3 Aircross 2 September 2025 2,022 Brake pedal bar weld
R/2025/362 Vauxhall Frontera 2 September 2025 353 Brake pedal bar weld

If your car is in a stop-drive recall, don't use it until the repair is done. Ask the manufacturer to collect the car and about a courtesy car. See do not drive recalls.

How Soon Brake Problems Lead To A Recall

Brake faults tend to be found quickly. Half of UK brake recalls arrive within 18.2 months of the first affected car being built, and 14% arrive five or more years later.

The quick ones are usually manufacturing problems, such as a weld or a pipe fitted wrongly on a batch of new cars, which show up in the first months of use. The slow ones are usually wear or corrosion, such as brake pipes that rust or seals that harden with age. So if you own an older car, a brake recall can still arrive, and a car that has changed hands may have missed the letter. Run your registration through our car recall check every few months.

The Biggest Brake Recalls In UK History

Vauxhall holds the three largest, led by a 1999 Astra brake fluid recall covering about 636,066 vehicle-records.

Recall Model Vehicle-records Fault
R/1999/098 Vauxhall Astra 636,066 Possible brake fluid contamination
R/2011/110 Vauxhall Corsa 405,690 Braking performance may be reduced
R/2007/171 Vauxhall Combo, Corsa, Tigra 345,634 ABS may fail

Recalls this old still apply to any car that was never fixed, because UK recalls don't expire. See do car recalls expire? and the biggest recalls in UK history.

Getting The Fix

Brake recall repairs are normally free.1 Many are software updates to ABS or electronic parking brake units; others replace pipes, pedal parts or pumps.

  • Book with any franchised dealer of your make. See manufacturer recall helplines.
  • Say if you've noticed a symptom when you book, so the dealer can prioritise you.
  • Ask for collection if the letter says not to drive or the brakes feel wrong; don't drive to the dealer.
  • Ask how long it will take. A software update can take under an hour; a new pedal box or pump can need parts ordered. See how long a recall repair takes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Brake Recalls Fail The MOT?

The recall line itself doesn't. An outstanding recall is shown for information only.2 But a brake defect found during the test can fail it. See recalls and the MOT.

Are Brake Pads Recalled?

Rarely. Most brake recalls involve the pedal, hydraulics, servo or electronics. Worn pads are a servicing item, not a recall.

Can I Tow With A Brake Recall Open?

Follow your letter. If it gives no restriction, you can usually tow, but if you notice any brake symptom, stop towing and get the car checked.

Is A Squeaking Or Grinding Brake A Recall?

Usually not. Noise from the brakes is most often worn pads or discs, which are servicing items. Get it checked by a garage, and run your registration through our checker in case a recall also applies.
