Are Car Recall Repairs Free In The UK? Who Pays, What's Included And When You Might Be Charged
Yes. Car safety recall repairs in the UK are free: the manufacturer pays for the parts and labour, whatever the car's age, warranty status or number of owners. GOV.UK says you will not usually have to pay for any repairs or parts under a safety recall.1
Are Car Recalls Free?
Yes
The manufacturer pays for parts and labour at a franchised dealer.
Which Car Is It?
Choose the make and model so we can match recalls to your car.
Who Pays For A Car Recall Repair?
The manufacturer pays. It supplies the parts and reimburses its franchised dealers for the labour.
The cost sits with the producer because the defect came from how the vehicle was designed or built.2 The dealer is paid by the manufacturer, which is why you book through a franchised dealer of your make rather than an independent garage.3 You should not see a bill for the recall work itself, and the job card should show a zero charge against the recall code.
What’s Free And What Isn’t
The recall work itself is free. Other work the dealer recommends during the visit, travel costs and damage caused before the recall are not automatically covered.
| Item | Free under the recall? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Parts named in the recall | Yes | Supplied by the manufacturer1 |
| Labour for the recall work | Yes | Paid to the dealer by the manufacturer |
| Inspection the recall requires | Yes | For example, checking whether an airbag needs converting |
| Other work recommended during the visit | No | Ask for it to be itemised and decide separately |
| Wear items such as tyres or brake pads | No | Unless the recall itself covers them |
| Travel to the dealer, or a hire car | Not automatically | Ask, especially for stop-drive recalls4 |
| Damage caused before the recall | Case by case | Ask the manufacturer with evidence. See compensation |
| Goodwill schemes for known faults that are not recalls | Depends on the scheme | Conditions apply5 |
Are Recalls Free If My Car Is Old, Out Of Warranty Or Second-hand?
Yes. There is no age, mileage or owner limit on a UK safety recall, and the recall stays in force even after the manufacturer stops actively chasing it.6
Recalls follow the car, not the person who bought it new. A third owner of a 15-year-old car has exactly the same right to the free repair as the first owner had. That matters because many recalled cars are old: at the end of 2025, 43 % of licensed cars had been first used in 2015 or earlier.7 Read more on whether car recalls expire.
Many Drivers Think They’ll Have To Pay. They Won’t.
A 2025 Motor Ombudsman poll found that 60 % of 17 to 34 year olds wrongly believe they would have to contribute to the cost of recall work.8
| Group | Share who think they would pay |
|---|---|
| 17 to 24 year olds | 56 % |
| 25 to 34 year olds | 62 % |
| Drivers aged 55 and over | 9 % |
| Men | 35 % |
| Women | 23 % |
Source: Motor Ombudsman poll of 1,100 UK drivers, November 2025.8 The same poll found that 22 % of 17 to 24 year olds would rely only on the seller to tell them about recalls.8 Running a free check yourself avoids both mistakes.
Are Recalls Free For Every Make?
Yes, for every make. Recall repairs are normally free at any franchised dealer of that brand.

Recall Work And Servicing In The Same Visit
Booking the recall alongside a service saves a trip, but the two are paid differently: the service is yours to pay for, and the recall work is the manufacturer's. Ask the dealer to show them as separate lines on the invoice.
That separation protects you in three ways. It makes clear that nothing was charged for the recall itself. It gives you a job card that names the recall campaign code, which is your proof of completion.9 And it stops any confusion if a part replaced under the recall is also a part the service would normally check.
If the dealer says a recall cannot be done without other paid work, ask for that in writing with the reason. The recall remedy is set by the manufacturer and agreed with DVSA, so a dealer should not make it conditional on extra work you have not chosen.6
What To Do If A Dealer Tries To Charge You
Ask for the charge to be itemised, refuse anything linked to the recall itself, and escalate to the manufacturer if needed.
The steps are:
- Ask for an itemised quote before agreeing to any work.
- Separate the recall from everything else. Quote the campaign code and say the recall work is free.1
- Decide on extras separately. You can refuse recommended work and have it done elsewhere.
- Escalate if needed. Contact the manufacturer's customer care team with the job card. See what to do if a dealer refuses to fix a recall.
Be wary of any request for payment that arrives by text, email or phone and mentions a recall. A genuine recall never asks you to pay or give card details. If you are unsure, check the campaign with our recall code lookup and see car recall scams.

Goodwill Schemes For Known Faults That Aren’t Recalls
Some problems are not safety recalls, for example PureTech oil consumption and belt wear, and they are handled through manufacturer goodwill or warranty schemes with their own conditions.5
Stellantis runs a compensation platform for 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech engines covering costs paid between 1 January 2022 and 31 December 2024 for excessive oil consumption or premature timing belt failure, subject to servicing and repair conditions.5 Ford's 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt is not covered by any DVSA recall reference.10 Our pages on PureTech recalls and the Ford EcoBoost wet belt explain what each scheme covers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Claim Back Money I Paid Before The Recall?
Ask the manufacturer. There is no automatic UK right to a refund, but some manufacturers reimburse repairs with proof. See car recall compensation.
Is A Courtesy Car Free?
If one is offered, yes, but it is not guaranteed. Ask when you book. See how a recall repair works.
Do I Pay For A Recall Check?
No. Checking your registration here is free. Use the car recall check at the top of our homepage.

- The Code does not itself say repairs are free. GOV.UK guidance says "You will not usually have to pay for any repairs or parts under a safety recall." gov.uk Checked 15 Oct 2026.
- Code definitions: A safety defect is a failure due to design and/or construction that is likely to affect safe operation and pose a significant risk (§3, Annex B). "Safety Recall (Stop Drive)" applies where "there is an immediate threat to safety so the vehicle must not be driven". Non-safety recalls include emissions non-conformity (§14).
- Manufacturers direct owners to any of their authorised/franchised retailers for recall work, not only the selling dealer: Vauxhall: "contact your authorised repairer". - On the Citroën/DS stop-drive, the Secretary of State wrote to Stellantis (reply received 12 Aug 2025) urging it to: provide viable alternatives (courtesy cars, financial compensation or at-home repair), especially for owners with urgent mobility needs; prioritise vulnerable customers (key workers, carers, disabled people); be transparent about timelines and support.
- Stellantis PureTech compensation platform: Covers 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech (Citroën, DS, Peugeot, Vauxhall). Covers costs for excessive oil consumption and/or premature timing-belt failure paid between 1 Jan 2022 and 31 Dec 2024. Servicing must follow the maintenance plan; diagnosis and repair must be in the authorised network. fleetnews.co.uk, stellantis.com
- Code timelines: Producers normally respond to DVSA within 28 days (5.5); DVSA reviews are typically monthly (5.4). DVSA must be notified "as soon as the safety defect has been confirmed" (6.1). 3 notifications per motorist is seen as reasonable (8.3). Response rates are reported every three months (11.1).
- Fleet survival (DfT VEH0124, end-2025): Still licensed: Citroën C3 (first used 2008 to 17) ≈ 69,465; Citroën DS3 (2009 to 16) ≈ 64,469; DS 3 non-Crossback (2015 to 19) ≈ 29,373; C4 (2010 to 18) ≈ 22,819; DS4 ≈ 9,229; DS5 ≈ 5,026. Vauxhall Zafira (2005 to 14) ≈ 92,375; Ford Kuga PHEV ≈ 48,302; Mazda MX-30 ≈ 6,528; Dacia Spring ≈ 6,018. 43 % of licensed cars were first used in 2015 or earlier; 17 % in 2010 or earlier.
- Motor Ombudsman (11 Nov 2025, poll of 1,100 UK drivers): 60 % of 17 to 34s believe they'd contribute to recall costs (56 % of 17 to 24; 62 % of 25 to 34; 9 % of 55+). 35 % of men vs 23 % of women. 22 % of 17 to 24s would rely solely on the seller to disclose recalls. themotorombudsman.org

- EcoBoost wet belt: No DVSA recall reference covers the 1.0 EcoBoost timing belt (scan 15 Oct 2026, data pack event ). Ford's official replacement interval is reported as 10 years or 150,000 miles (Parkers); some parts suppliers quote shorter intervals. No published UK Ford goodwill programme was found. Ignore a web claim of a "December 2023 wet-belt recall": it is not in DVSA data (probably non-UK). parkers.co.uk
