Takata Airbag Recalls In The UK: Which Cars Are Affected, How To Check Yours And How The Free Replacement Works

Recall data from DVSA, updated 15 October 2026.

Takata airbag recalls replace airbag inflators whose propellant can degrade with age, heat and humidity and then rupture, throwing metal fragments when the airbag deploys. In the UK these car safety recalls cover models from Vauxhall, BMW, Citroën, DS, Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, Škoda, Mercedes-Benz, Mazda, Honda, Toyota, Nissan and Ford, mostly built between 2000 and 2019. The replacement is normally free at a franchised dealer.1

Which Cars Have Takata Airbag Recalls In The UK?

DVSA records name Takata in 56 UK car recalls, led by Mercedes-Benz, Mazda, Audi, BMW and Citroën. The largest, Vauxhall's December 2025 recall, covers 949,336 vehicle-records across the Astra, Mokka, Meriva, Zafira, Vectra, Signum and Cascada.

The table lists every DVSA recall whose wording names Takata or its inflator types. A second tab lists the 117 airbag inflator recalls where DVSA's text does not name the supplier. Many Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda and BMW actions between 2013 and 2019 were part of the worldwide Takata programme, but we only label a recall "Takata" when the official wording says so.

How To Check If Your Car Has A Takata Airbag Recall

Check your registration here, then confirm with your VIN by calling the manufacturer or a franchised dealer, because airbag recalls often cover specific build-date or VIN ranges rather than every car of a model.

The three steps are:

  1. Run the registration check at the top of this page. It shows the recall status held by the MOT service and the airbag recalls that match your model and age.
  2. Confirm with your VIN. Call the manufacturer's recall line or any franchised dealer with your 17-character VIN; our manufacturer recall helplines page lists each official number.
  3. Read any letter carefully. It names the airbag being replaced and says whether you must stop driving.

Your 17-character VIN is on your V5C logbook and at the base of the windscreen. See where to find your VIN for every location.

Vauxhall notes that its recall runs in phases, so a VIN that shows no campaign today may be added later.2 If your car falls inside a recalled model and build range, check again every few months.

Why Takata Airbags Are Dangerous

Takata used ammonium nitrate propellant without a drying agent in many inflators. Over years of heat and humidity, that propellant can burn too fast, burst the inflator housing and spray metal fragments into the cabin when the airbag deploys.

How a Takata airbag inflator fails Normal inflatorDegraded inflator on deployment 1 Moisture gets in 2 Propellant degrades 3 Housing can split
  1. Moisture gets inOver many years, heat and humidity change the propellant.
  2. Propellant degradesIt then burns too fast when the airbag deploys.
  3. The housing can splitPressure can rupture the metal case and throw fragments.
How a Takata inflator fails: propellant absorbs moisture over many years, burns too fast on deployment and can split the metal housing.

The DVSA recall texts use several inflator codes. The terms you are most likely to see are:

Term in a recall notice What it means
PSAN Phase-stabilised ammonium nitrate, the propellant at the heart of the Takata problem
Non-desiccated An inflator without a drying agent. These are the ones most at risk as they age
PSDI-5, SDI Types of driver's airbag inflator named in BMW and other notices
PSPI A type of passenger airbag inflator
Desiccated An inflator with a drying agent. These are treated differently and are not all recalled

The risk depends on three things working together: the type of inflator, the age of the car and the climate it has lived in. Heat and humidity speed up the change in the propellant, which is why the worst outcomes have been reported in hot countries. In France, about 20 deaths have been linked to defective inflators, mostly in overseas territories with tropical climates.3 Cars that spent years abroad, including some personal imports, can carry more risk than a car that has only ever been used in the UK.

Not every car with a Takata part is recalled. A Takata steering wheel or seat belt is not the issue: the recalls target specific inflators. That is why the VIN check matters more than the badge on the car.

Is The Takata Recall Still Active In 2026?

Yes. 2025 was the busiest year for Takata recalls in UK records, with 17 recall references naming Takata, and 4 more have been added so far in 2026.

Highest: 2025 (17). Latest: 2026 (4). Source: DVSA recall data.

The age of the cars explains the timing. For recalls that name Takata, the median gap between the first car built and the recall being launched is 196.1 months, which is more than fifteen years. Every one of them came at least five years after production started. Across all UK car recalls the median gap is 20.4 months, so airbag inflators stand out as a problem that grows with age.

That pattern matters for owners of older cars. A model that was never recalled when it was new can still be recalled now, which is why our guide to whether car recalls expire recommends checking every car, whatever its age. The full list of recent car recalls shows each new airbag recall as it is registered.

Should I Stop Driving My Car?

Only if your letter or the manufacturer says so for your VIN. 7 UK Takata recalls carry stop-drive wording, including the Citroën C3 and DS3 action in 2025.

DVSA considers the UK low risk for the Takata defect, because the failures are linked to hot, humid climates.4 The risk is still real enough that some manufacturers have told owners not to drive until the airbag is replaced, and that instruction must be followed.

If your notice says do not drive, these steps apply:

  • Leave the car parked and call the manufacturer or a franchised dealer.
  • Ask for collection or a home repair rather than driving to the dealer.
  • Ask about a courtesy car or travel support, especially if you depend on the car.

Our page on stop-drive recalls explains your rights and lists every current notice.

How Long Does The Airbag Replacement Take, And Is It Free?

The replacement is free, and GOV.UK says you will not usually have to pay for repairs or parts under a safety recall.1 No manufacturer publishes a standard repair time, and the main wait is for parts. Vauxhall, for example, is recalling cars in phases as parts become available.2

The work itself follows a set pattern at the dealer. The technician confirms the VIN is in scope, disconnects the battery, removes the old airbag module, fits the new one and runs a diagnostic check of the airbag system. The old part goes back to the manufacturer. You should leave with a job card that names the recall, even though there is nothing to pay.

When you book, ask the dealer three questions:

  1. How long will the car be in the workshop?
  2. When will the parts arrive?
  3. Is a courtesy car available if the wait is long?

During the 2025 Citroën action, some owners were offered dates months away.5 If that happens, ask other franchised dealers and put any request for support in writing. Our guides on how a recall repair works and whether car recalls are free cover the booking and what is included.

How Many Cars Are Affected?

UK recall references naming Takata cover 3,823,752 vehicle-records, and other airbag inflator recalls cover 4,156,825 more. Worldwide, around 100 million inflators had been recalled by 2017.6

These figures need care. A vehicle-record is the manufacturer's estimate of cars covered by one recall reference. The same car can appear in more than one reference, for example when a check is followed by a replacement, so the totals overstate the number of individual cars. The split between the two groups also matters. The Takata-named references are concentrated in recent years, while the other inflator references cluster between 2013 and 2019, when Honda, Toyota, Nissan and others ran large worldwide airbag actions. Reading the two groups side by side shows how the recall effort moved from Japanese brands in the 2010s to European brands in the 2020s.

They are still the best public measure of scale, and they show that the Takata programme is one of the largest recall actions in UK history. Our car recall statistics page explains how vehicle-records add up across all recalls.

Are Older Cars Still On The Road Affected?

Many are. Department for Transport licensing figures show about 69,500 Citroën C3s and 64,500 Citroën DS3s from the recalled build years were still licensed at the end of 2025.7

Older cars make up a large share of what is on UK roads. At the end of 2025, 43 % of licensed cars had been first used in 2015 or earlier.7 Many of those cars have changed hands several times, so recall letters can go astray. If you own or are buying a car from the recalled years, run the check yourself rather than waiting for the post. Manufacturers write to the registered keeper using DVLA records, and a letter can only reach the address on the V5C.8 A car bought privately last month, or a keeper who moved without updating the logbook, can easily miss a recall that was launched years ago. Our guide to buying a used car with an outstanding recall explains what a dealer must do before selling.

Takata Recall Calls And Texts: How To Spot A Fake

Genuine Takata recall notices come from the manufacturer by letter to the registered keeper and never ask for payment. If a call or text asks you to "confirm online", check your registration here and call a dealer on a number from the manufacturer's own website.

Some manufacturers call owners or use partner companies to book home airbag repairs, so a call about an appointment can be genuine. The safe response is the same either way:

  • Do not click links in unexpected texts or emails about a recall.
  • Never pay or give card details. Recall work is free.
  • Report suspected fraud to Report Fraud on 0300 123 2040 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, or to Police Scotland on 101.9

You can also look up the campaign code on your letter with our recall code lookup. See car recall scams for more examples.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is The Passenger Airbag Included?

Some recalls replace the driver's airbag, others the passenger's, and some both. The DVSA recall reference states which, and the recall page for each reference on this site shows it in plain English.

Can I Disconnect The Airbag Myself?

No. Only a franchised dealer should work on airbag modules. A disconnected airbag that lights the SRS warning lamp because of a fault is a major MOT fail.10

Does A Takata Recall Fail The MOT?

No. An outstanding recall is shown on the MOT record for information.11 An SRS warning lamp that indicates a fault is a major fail.10 See recalls and the MOT.

Can I Sell A Car With An Open Takata Recall?

Trading Standards says a car with a serious recall or stop-drive warning should not be sold in that state, and doing so may be an offence.12 Private sellers should disclose it and ideally get the repair done first.

My Car Isn't Listed But Has Takata Parts. What Now?

Check by VIN with the manufacturer. Not every Takata airbag is recalled: desiccated inflators are treated differently, and recalls target specific build ranges.
