How To Check Your Seat Belts In Two Minutes

Pull each belt out fully and let it retract, tug it sharply to check it locks, check the buckle latches and releases, and look along the webbing for cuts or fraying.

  1. Pull it out fully and let it go. It should wind back smoothly without sticking.
  2. Tug it sharply. The belt should lock straight away.
  3. Buckle and unbuckle it. The tongue should click in firmly and release cleanly.
  4. Check the webbing along its full length for cuts, fraying, stiffness or stretched sections.

Do this for every seat, including the rear. A belt that fails any of these checks needs a garage, recall or not. This check can't find every recall fault, such as an anchor bolt that wasn't tightened at the factory, so run your registration through our checker too.

What Goes Wrong With Seat Belts?

Recalls cover anchor bolts that weren't tightened, pretensioners that may not fire, buckles that may not latch, frayed webbing and the cables that hold the buckle.

  5. WebbingThe belt itself; tears or wrong material.

Anchor bolts Bolts not tightened to the right torque Hyundai Ioniq 6 and Santa Fe, R/2026/322 12,875
Lap belt tensioner May not tighten the belt in a crash Audi Q3, R/2026/325 2,444

The Volvo buckle cable recall is the largest seat belt recall in DVSA's data. Pretensioners are small charges that pull the belt tight in the first moment of a crash; if they don't fire, the belt still holds but lets the occupant move further forward. Most seat belt fixes are new parts rather than software: only 5% include a software update.

Seat Belts, Child Seats And ISOFIX

If a recall affects the rear belts or the ISOFIX points, don't fit a child seat there until the repair is done.

Many child car seats are held in by the car's own seat belt, and others by ISOFIX anchor points fixed to the car's body. A fault in either can stop the child seat holding properly in a crash. In 2026, several motorhome recalls involved ISOFIX mountings.1 If your letter names a seat position, move the child seat to an unaffected seat if one is suitable, and check the seat's own recall status. See child car seat recalls and motorhome recalls.

Seat belt problems are usually caught early. Half of these recalls arrive within 13 months of the first affected car being built, the shortest gap of any type of fault in our data. For rates adjusted for cars on the road, see which car makes have the most recalls.

Seat Belts And The MOT

A loose anchorage or damaged webbing is a major MOT defect whether or not there is a recall, and a structure likely to come away in a crash is dangerous.2

The recall itself doesn't fail the MOT, because an outstanding recall is shown for information only.3 But the MOT tester checks belts for cuts, fraying and overstretching, and checks the anchor points.2 See recalls and the MOT.

Getting The Fix

Seat belt recall repairs are normally free at a franchised dealer.4 Most involve fitting new parts, such as a buckle, anchor bolts or a complete belt, so ask the dealer whether the parts are in stock when you book.

  • Book with any franchised dealer of your make. See manufacturer recall helplines.
  • Tell the dealer which seats you use most, especially if you carry children, so the work can be prioritised.
  • Keep the invoice showing the recall was done, which helps when you sell the car.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Drive With A Seat Belt Recall?

Follow your letter. Most seat belt recalls don't stop you driving, but avoid using the affected seat until the repair if you can. See can you drive a car with a recall?.

Who Fixes A Seat Belt Recall?

Any franchised dealer of your make, and the repair is normally free.4 See manufacturer recall helplines.

Do Seat Belts Need To Retract?

Yes. A belt should wind back smoothly when released. One that sticks or stays loose needs checking, whether or not there is a recall.

Is A Seat Belt Warning Light A Recall?

Not on its own. The light usually means a belt isn't fastened or a sensor has a fault. If it stays on with every belt fastened, get it checked and run your registration through our checker.
