UK Car Recalls For Sudden Loss Of Power Or Stalling: Affected Models, Causes And What To Do On The Road

Recall data from DVSA, updated 15 October 2026.

Loss of power recalls fix faults that can make an engine stall, drop into limp mode or lose drive without warning, most often software, fuel pumps, 12-volt batteries or high-voltage electrics. DVSA lists 90 UK car recalls of this kind since 2020. Check your registration and book the free fix.

If Your Car Loses Power While Driving

Switch on your hazard lights, steer to the left or onto the hard shoulder or an emergency area, stop, get out on the side away from traffic and call for help.

  1. Hazard lights on straight away.
  2. Steer to safety. Use the car's momentum to reach the left lane, the hard shoulder or an emergency area. The steering and brakes may feel heavier if the engine has stopped.
  3. Stop and switch off.
  4. Get out on the left, away from traffic, and stand behind a barrier if there is one.
  5. Call for help. On a motorway, use an emergency phone or call 999 if you are in a live lane.

Don't try to restart and carry on if the car has cut out without explanation. Get it checked, then run your registration through our checker. See can you drive a car with a recall?.

Why Cars Lose Power

The main causes behind these recalls are engine software, failing fuel pumps, venting or failing 12-volt batteries, and high-voltage inverter or contactor faults in electric cars.

Cause UK example Vehicle-records Typical fix
Engine or gearbox software Many models; 28% of these recalls include a software update Software update. See software recalls
Fuel pump Honda Civic, CR-V, HR-V and Jazz, R/2020/186 76,887 New pump module. See fuel recalls
12-volt battery Ford Transit and Transit Custom, R/2026/018 147,340 Battery check or replacement
High-voltage inverter or contactors Ford Mustang Mach-E, R/2022/194 6,535 Software and parts. See electric car recalls
EGR valve Ford Kuga and Ranger, R/2026/160 834 New valve
Wiring routing Jaecoo 7, R/2026/299 4,933 Reroute and protect wiring
Historic: stalling Nissan Almera, Primera, Tino and X-Trail, R/2003/170 111,831 Engine management repair

Modern cars depend on electronics to keep the engine running and, on electric cars, to keep drive to the wheels. A software fault, a weak 12-volt battery or a high-voltage contactor that opens unexpectedly can all cut power. That is why such a large share of these recalls are fixed with software.

How Soon Power Problems Lead To A Recall

Half of UK loss of power recalls arrive within 21.5 months of the first affected car being built, and 17% arrive five or more years later.

Software faults tend to be found within the first year or two, once enough cars are on the road for a pattern to show. Hardware faults such as fuel pumps and 12-volt batteries can take longer, because they depend on wear. If your car has cut out before and a recall later appears for it, tell the dealer about the earlier incident when you book the repair.

Electric And Hybrid Cars

On an electric car, a loss of drive usually comes with a warning on the dashboard and a gradual slowdown rather than a sudden stop, but the steps are the same: hazard lights, steer to safety, stop and call for help. Some electric car recalls fix contactors or inverters that could cut drive without warning. See electric car recalls.

Getting The Fix

Loss of power recall repairs are normally free at a franchised dealer.1 Many are software updates that take under an hour; others need a new pump, battery or wiring. If the car has already cut out, ask for collection. See manufacturer recall helplines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Limp Mode A Recall?

Not on its own. Limp mode is the car protecting itself from a fault, which may or may not be covered by a recall. Get it checked, and run your registration through our checker.

Does Stalling Fail The MOT?

No, unless the tester finds a related defect. An outstanding recall is shown for information only.2 See recalls and the MOT.

My Car Stalled But Has No Recall. What Now?

Book a garage diagnosis and keep a note of when it happened. If you believe it is a design defect, you can report it. See how to report a vehicle safety defect.
