UK Car Recalls For Suspension Faults: Broken Springs, Cracked Arms And Axles, The Warning Signs And The Free Fix

Recall data from DVSA, updated 15 October 2026.

Suspension recalls replace springs, arms, knuckles, shock absorbers and axle parts that could crack or break. DVSA lists 158 UK car recalls involving suspension since 2020, and almost all need a part fitted rather than a software update. Check your registration and get any knock or lean checked.

Warning Signs

Get the car checked if it knocks over bumps, sits lower on one corner, pulls to one side or the steering feels vague.

Sign What it can mean What to do
Knock or clunk over bumps A broken spring, worn mount or loose bolt Book a check soon
One corner sits lower A broken coil spring Drive gently to a garage
Car pulls to one side A bent arm, damaged knuckle or loose axle part Book a check before driving far
Vague or wandering steering Worn or damaged suspension joints Book a check soon
Grinding or scraping from a wheel A broken spring rubbing on the tyre Stop and get the car recovered

A broken spring can cut into a tyre, so if you see one, don't drive on it. See car recall symptoms.

Which Suspension Parts Get Recalled?

Coil springs, control arms, knuckles, shock absorber mounts and axle bolts make up most suspension recalls.

The suspension parts named in recalls Body 1 Coil spring 2 Shock absorber 3 Top mount 4 Control arm 5 Knuckle 6 Hub and wheel bolts
  1. Coil springCan crack or break, especially where it sits.
  2. Shock absorberDamper that can leak or come loose.
  3. Top mountWhere the strut meets the body.
  4. Control armLinks the wheel to the car; welds or joints can fail.
  5. KnuckleHolds the wheel hub; cracks can let the wheel move.
  6. Axle and wheel boltsBolts that may not be tightened correctly.

Part What can go wrong UK example Vehicle-records
Coil springs Can break, especially with corrosion Citroën Berlingo and Picasso, R/2005/095 163,446
Coil springs As above Dacia Bigster, R/2026/240 169
Front knuckle Can crack Range Rover, R/2026/329 4
Shock absorber bracket A weld may be weak Kia PV5, R/2026/219 465
Rear axle bolts Bolted connection may not be tight Volkswagen Polo, R/2025/385 2

Suspension recalls are mechanical. Only 1% include a software update, compared with 36% of all UK car recalls in 2025, so expect a workshop visit with parts. They are also found quickly: half arrive within 14.5 months of the first affected car being built, among the shortest gaps of any type of fault.

Why Springs And Arms Fail

Suspension parts take a beating on UK roads. Potholes, speed bumps and winter salt all add stress and corrosion, and a part with a small manufacturing flaw, such as a weak weld or a spring with poor coating, can crack long before it should. Most recalls cover a batch of parts with that kind of flaw. A broken spring or cracked arm is not always a recall, though: age and corrosion break springs on any car, so a garage repair may be needed even when no recall applies.

Stop-drive Suspension Recalls

Rarely, a suspension fault is serious enough for a stop-drive notice, as with a 2025 Volkswagen Polo rear axle bolt recall, R/2025/385.

Only 1 suspension recall in DVSA's data uses stop-drive wording. If your car is affected, don't drive it until the repair is done, and ask the manufacturer to collect it. See do not drive recalls.

Getting The Fix

Suspension recall repairs are normally free at a franchised dealer.1 Ask whether the parts are in stock when you book, and say if you have noticed any symptom. See manufacturer recall helplines and how long a recall repair takes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does A Broken Spring Fail The MOT?

Yes. A broken spring is a defect at the MOT, whether or not there is a recall. The recall itself is shown for information only.2 See recalls and the MOT.

Is A Suspension Recall Repair Free?

Yes, you won't usually pay for a safety recall repair.1 See do you have to pay for a car recall?.

Can I Tow With A Suspension Recall Open?

Follow your letter. Extra weight puts more load on the suspension, so if the recall involves springs, arms or axles, avoid towing until the repair unless the letter says otherwise.
